Bankruptcy cases fall and Jobless Youth & Healthcare

New bankruptcy cases fall in Broward

Here are a couple of feel good stories that I think are safe to link together. One is about the fact that bankruptcies are down 22% in Broward County! That is truly good news and you can bet if they are down there they probably are for the surrounding counties that together comprise South Florida. This is a sign of an improving economy and more responsible home ownership. All good and let's hope it will continue. The other article deals with a curious but fortunate for consumers (via Medicare and Medicaid not everyone else per se) fact that medical costs are declining. I didn't know this but they have been in steady decline now for 4 years! That is because I haven't noticed this when seeing doctors, which I do as infrequently as possible. I credit this as a result of the difficult economy. In good times these guys could charge more and no one really complained. But when times got tough and patients put off procedures, regular maintenance work and cleanings, they got the picture. These are the ancillary benefits of a bad economy, a silver lining of sorts.

US health care spending growth remains low for fourth year

We were just talking about this the other day!! It is almost as if someone was listening. Here are actual financial statistics on the economic impact that the jobless are having on the Nation. They use modest assumptions and the numbers are truly staggering. The government in a realistic conservative scenario is missing out on $25 billion per year in uncollected taxes. What is really tough is how many of the unemployed are young, the statistic used here is 16 - 24 years old. They are 15% unemployed, more than double that for all workers. The good news is this has lead to an increased focus on programs to help youth.
